The Bluestockings are committed to increasing opportunities for women to make meaningful and lasting contributions to the theatrical community. Our goal is to take advantage of all the untapped talent of the women of Portland, and to inspire and cultivate the development of new talent.

The members of the Bluestockings are actors, directors, producers, playwrights, lighting technicians, house managers, set designers and more. We come from all over the country; from diverse professional backgrounds, and yet all share a similar and profound passion: theater.

As strong roles for women in theater are few and far between, and women are regularly underrepresented in casting, directing, designing and acting choices, the Bluestockings are committed to recognizing, and remedying, this disparity. Alongside our male colleagues and supporters, the Bluestockings are working to rectify this historical imbalance and bring about a female renaissance in theater.

Under the helm of Artistic Director Buffie Rogers, the eleven members of the Bluestockings have collaborated with the larger Portland theater community to produce, direct, and act in shows that give voice to women’s experience and showcase female talent.
